Aims

  • We aim to develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of the Modern Foreign Language in a range of contexts.
  • Develop the ability to communicated effectively in the modern foreign language through both the spoken and the written word, using a range of vocabulary and structures.
  • Apply their knowledge and understanding in a variety of relevant contexts which reflect their previous learning and maturity.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of countries and communities where the modern foreign language is spoken.
  • Develop positive attitudes to modern foreign language learning.
  • Provide a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the modern foreign language.

  • German for high flyers in years 8 and 9 (taught after school)

Study Tips

Top Ten Hottest Tips for Learning Vocabulary

  1. Jumble words up then match the English to the French/German
  2. Ask someone to test you
  3. Learn 5 words at a time
  4. Read them, then go away for ten minutes, come back and see how many you can remember
  5. Colour code words, e.g. masculine words in blue and feminine words in pink
  6. Read them every night before you go to sleep
  7. Teach someone else the words
  8. Start a bank of words on your computer on in a book
  9. Write the words on sticky labels and then stick them around the house. Be careful on furniture though!
  10. Learn the difficult ones first

How you can help your child in Languages

Parents often ask us how they can help their child to learn a foreign language and listed below are some ways in which you can help to raise your child's achievement.

  1. Find out when language homework is set and remind your child when it should be done
  2. Check that homework has been completed and the presentation is acceptable
  3. Buy a dictionary and help them to use it
  4. Try to motivate your child and emphasise the importance of learning a language for their future and the fun that can result. Careers using languages include: retail, catering, journalism, travel, engineering and professional football.
  5. Test your child on their vocabulary. Try to ensure that they write the words down when revising
  6. Ask them to tell you what they have been learning
  7. Encourage them to look over new and previously learnt words on a regular basis, even if no test has been set
  8. Get them to teach you or another member of the family what they have been learning
